"Fat Lava" refers to a distinctive style of West German ceramics from the midcentury period, particularly the 1950s to the 1970s. Characterised by thick, textured glazes that often resemble molten lava, this style was popularised by a range of German pottery manufacturers, including Scheurich, Bay, Roth, and Dümler & Breiden. The name "Fat Lava" comes from the heavy, bubbly, and often dripping glaze effects, which were created through experimental glazing techniques that produced highly textured and volcanic-like surfaces.
These ceramics were a response to the modernist movement, embracing bold, sculptural forms and vibrant colours, from deep reds and oranges to earthy browns and blues. Many pieces featured strong geometric shapes, abstract patterns, or organic, freeform designs, making them a striking contrast to the more restrained Scandinavian ceramics of the time. Today, Fat Lava ceramics are highly collectible, celebrated for their innovative craftsmanship and their role in defining the aesthetic of midcentury West German design.
